The Toowoomba Junior Rugby League have approved the introduction of an under-6 competition in 2018.

The new competition is aimed at addressing the increasing participation rates in the under-6 age group.

It will give youngsters more time on the field and with the ball. The rules for under-6 will be the same for under-7; smaller teams, giving players a “second chance”, and handing over to the opposition after a try.

TJRL President Dan Aldons said the new competition would allow a boost in a popular grade of junior footy and accommodate its increasing participation rates.

“We want as many boys and girls playing the game. It’s important we’re sending the message that our game is the sport of choice,” Aldons said.

Parents want to see their kids having fun and enjoying their rugby league in a safe and friendly environment, particularly their younger ones.

“We hope that the change introduced from this season will ensure that more boys and girls are given a greater opportunity to have a go, throw the footy around and walk off the field each week having had a lot of fun with their friends,” Aldons added.

Children, boys and girls, born in 2012 & 2013* are eligible to register for the new under-6 season.

The move was endorsed at the TJRL Management Committee Meeting in December.
